Political Cartoonists Rely on Text Over Drawings to Know What They Are

Rick Rosenberg had a passion for cartooning, but was not very good.

“Nobody would know the caricature that I was attempting to draw, I thought my career in cartooning was done for” said Rosenberg

“Then I discovered political cartoons, I was surprised to find a cartoon format that did not rely on competency of drawing ability”

Rosenberg continued, “It doesn’t matter that I can’t draw a recognizable Ted Cruz, I can just draw him wearing ”Cruz” printed on his clothes, problem solved”

“The wall in my drawing is not good enough to convey that is is Trump’s wall on the Mexican border… no problem, I add the text “Trump Wall” and it is absolutely acceptable.”

In political cartooning, cartoonist rely on text over their drawings, for their audience to know their intentions.

Political cartoons have been a format for mediocre cartoonists to pursue their dream since the late 18th century.
