Traveling for the holiday, two passengers of Southwest flight 2583 were unlucky enough to be sitting on either side of a middle seat passenger who decided to us use the personal space separators as his own personal armrests.
Aisle seat passenger, David Morgan, flipped down the personal space separator next to him, in anticipation of the middle seat being filled.
“I do not like the idea of touching elbows with a stranger, so as soon as it was announced the flight was going to full, I flipped down the separator next to me.”
Window seat passenger, Gene Lazenby, followed suit and did the same.
“But then the gentleman that sat between us proceeded to put his elbows on the separators, as if they were his own personal armrests.”
Lazenby passive aggressively suggested that was not the purpose of the personal space separators.
“I said, I hope you don’t intend to use my seat tray as a foot rest”
The middle seat passenger could not be reached for comment, but according to Morgan and Lazenby, the passenger’s position was that he could use the separators as armrests because that was the benefit of sitting in the middle seat.
“Excuse me! There is NO benefit to sitting in the middle seat,” objected Lazenby.
Morgan chimed in, “The middle seat is for poor planners and procrastinators, you don’t get a reward for that.”
According to the flight crew, it is very common for the middle seat passenger to act entitled and inconsiderate.
“We have an unofficial policy of looking the other way when it comes to this behavior. We’ve let it go for so long, it would be difficult to adopt an official policy at this point”
